Monks Sail Past Pilgrims, 78-49

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (11-7, 7-0 GNAC) cruised past New England College (8-10, 3-4 GNAC), 78-49, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball contest on Mike McDevitt Court at the Harold Alfond Center on Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks led from wire to wire and opened the conference tilt with seven unanswered points in the first two minutes. Saint Joseph's led by a 17-8 margin after the first quarter, during which the hosts shot 43.8% (7-16) from the field while holding the visitors to a 2-for-11 (18.2%) clip.

St. Joe's kicked off the second stanza with 10 straight points as a Hailey Anderson (Beverly, Mass.) jump shot capped the run with the Monks leading 27-8 with 7:44 before the break. Sophomore forward Grace Ramsdell (Wells, Maine) netted nine points in a matter of two minutes and 30 seconds to help the hosts carry a 42-20 lead into intermission.

After starting the third period with a 15-5 outbreak, the Monks held a game-high 32-point lead (57-25) when Anderson closed out the surge with a layup with 4:34 remaining in the penultimate quarter.

STATS OF THE GAME:

The Monks scored 27 points off 22 NEC turnovers while committing just eight miscues in the victory…SJC shot 45.5% (30-66) from the field while the Pilgrims made 30.8% (16-52) of their shots from the floor.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Ramsdell netted 17 points on 7-for-11 shooting with five rebounds
  • Senior Angelica Hurley (Groveland, Mass.) added 12 points, six assists, two rebounds, and a pair of steals
  • Sophomore Elisabeth Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) scored 10 points with five boards and two assists
  • Senior Nina Howe (York, Maine) chipped in with nine points, five steals, four assists, and three rebounds
  • Anderson came off the bench to net seven points while pulling down four rebounds
  • Freshman Cadance Gilbert (Keene, N.H.) contributed six points in six minutes off the bench

LEADERS – NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE:

  • Senior Kathleen Rodriguez (McFarland, Calif.) was 4-for-5 from the floor with 14 points and four rebounds
  • Sophomore Makiah Scott (Washington, D.C.) tallied 11 points with five assists and three rebounds
  • Junior Krystie Medrano (Ontario, Calif.) made 3-of-4 shots from downtown with nine points in 12 minutes off the bench

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 6-3 all time versus New England College and has now defeated the Pilgrims in four-consecutive meetings.

Saint Joseph's will play at Anna Maria College on Saturday. The GNAC contest is set to begin at 12:00 PM.
