Dominant Second Half Pushes Monks Past Chargers, 73-52

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (7-6, 3-0 GNAC) upended Colby-Sawyer College (3-9, 0-2 GNAC), 73-52, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball contest on Mike McDevitt Court at the Harold Alfond Center on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks faced a 14-12 deficit after the first quarter and carried a 27-26 edge into halftime after enduring four ties and six lead changes in the second stanza. Sophomore forward Grace Ramsdell (Wells, Maine) led all first-half scorers with 11 points while junior forward Courtney Brewster (Castleton, Vt.) paced the Chargers with nine points in the opening 20 minutes.

The conference rivals played through a pair of tie scores in the third period before the hosts capped the penultimate frame with a 7-1 run to stake a 50-44 advantage heading into the final stanza.

As it played out, the scoring burst was just the start of a much larger 29-1 outburst that ended with a Maddie Russell (Oakland, Maine) layup and the hosts holding a game-high 26-point (72-46) cushion with 3:14 on the clock.

Saint Joseph's outscored Colby-Sawyer by a 46-18 margin while shooting 48.5% (16-33) from the field in the second half.

STATS OF THE GAME:

The Monks held the lead in points in the paint (38-16), second chance points (13-2), and points off turnovers (18-9) in the triumph.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Ramsdell led all players with 16 points on 7-for-11 shooting while pulling down seven rebounds
  • Senior guard Nina Howe (York, Maine) netted 15 points with four assists, three boards, and a pair of steals
  • Senior guard Angelica Hurley (Groveland, Mass.) added 12 points, seven caroms, five assists, and a pair of steals
  • Russell came off the bench to score nine points with five rebounds

LEADERS – COLBY-SAWYER:

  • Brewster tallied 11 points and six rebounds
  • Junior guard Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) chipped in with 11 points, four boards, and a pair of assists
  • Junior guard Gabby Lucertini (Branford, Conn.) scored 11 points with two rebounds and two assists

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 10-1 in the history of the series with Colby-Sawyer College and has now defeated the Chargers in nine consecutive meetings.
