Box Score STANDISH, ME - The Saint Joseph's (7-4-1, 4-1 GNAC)
men's soccer team posted a crucial 1-0 victory over Norwich
University (5-5-2, 2-2-1) in a rematch of the 2008 GNAC
Championship match on Saturday afternoon at Westerlea Way Field.
Doug MacCallum '10 (Hingham, MA) notched the
game-clincher, his seventh goal of the season off a Corey
Grant '13 (Haverhill, MA) lead pass, in the 52nd minute
and Will Pike '10 (Gorham, ME) made four saves to
collect his sixth shutout of the season in a physical contest.
Norwich outshot St. Joe's, 10-9, and steered four
shots in net in the loss. The Monks scored on their only bid on
goal and held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Cadets had several opportunities to tie the
game in the waning minutes. Bobby Begin '10 (Hardwick, MA) and Jake
Leclaire '13 (Las Vegas, NV) each had chances from close proximity
in the final three minutes, but Pike left the net
to challenge the strikers and came up with a crucial save on both
plays.
Pike now has 14 career shutouts,
which puts him in a tie with Michael Bolanz '99
for the program record.
In the last meeting between the two teams, Norwich
defeated Saint Joseph's in the GNAC Championship, 2-1, in
Northfield, VT on November 8 th .
Saint Joseph's will play at Lasell on Monday in a
conference match slated to begin at 3:30 PM. Norwich will play host
to GNAC rival Mount Ida on Monday at 3:30 PM.
