STANDISH, Maine - #10/16 Saint Joseph's College (9-0, 5-0 GNAC) defeated Regis College (3-3-1, 1-3-1 GNAC), 4-0, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer action at the SJC Athletics Complex on Saturday evening.

THE LEAD

Saint Joseph's junior midfielder Cody Elliott (Gorham, Maine) played a hand in all four goals with a marker and three assists to help the Monks remain undefeated on the season.

THE REST OF THE STORY

The conference rivals played fairly even in the first 20 minutes, but the Monks - ranked 10th and 16th in this week's D3soccer.com and United Soccer Coaches NCAA DIII national polls, respectively - broke through at the 32:14 mark when freshman Austin Ward (North Andover, Mass.) – who had just entered the game four minutes earlier – netted his fourth goal of the season off an Elliott feed.

Elliott doubled the SJC advantage barely 10 minutes later when he received a perfect pass from sophomore Colin Grant (Harvard, Mass.) in the box and buried a shot past Regis netminder Jesse Bonilla (Ramona, Calif.).

The 2-0 lead remained until the 53rd minute when senior Brett Mattos (Mahopac, N.Y.) scored off an Elliott corner kick. Junior Mitchell Duncan (Sanford, Maine) closed out the scoring ledger with his second goal of the year just three minutes later.

THE KEEPERS

Saint Joseph's senior Blake Mullen (Manchester, Conn.) made a pair of saves in 70 minutes of play and sophomore David Walbridge (Hampden, Mass.) was untested in 20 minutes of relief work.

Bonilla took the loss for the Pride after stopping four shots in 58 minutes while Josh Barrows (Rochester, N.Y.) turned away all three shots he faced in 32 minutes of mop-up duty.

TEAM STATS

Saint Joseph's held the lead in shots (24-8), shots on goal (12-2), and corner kicks (9-5) on the evening.

NOTEWORTHY

  • With the win, the Monks extend their undefeated streak to 30 games, marking the 14th time in the history of NCAA DIII Men's Soccer that a team has posted such a streak of 30 or more contests and first since Rutgers-Camden went 37 matches without a setback during the 2012 and 2013 seasons. The NCAA DIII Men's Soccer record for longest undefeated streak is held by Wheaton (IL), which went 66 games without a loss from September of 1996 to November of 1998.
  • With his first assist of the contest, Elliott surpassed Paul Robins '11 to become the Monks' all-time assists leader with 24 helpers in 49 games; Robins tallied 21 assists in 79 contests over four seasons

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING

With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 3-0 all-time versus Regis College. The Monks defeated the Pride twice last fall, which was their first season as a member of the GNAC.

NEXT!

The Monks will host Colby-Sawyer College – new to the GNAC this fall – on Wednesday at 6:00 PM.
