Monks Shoot Past Lasers, Win Sixth Straight

NEWTON, Mass. – Saint Joseph's College (13-6, 6-0 GNAC) cruised past Lasell University (9-10, 2-5 GNAC), 80-62, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon. The Monks have now won six-consecutive games.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Saint Joseph's controlled the game from the start and held a 27-12 lead after shooting 69.2% (9-13) from the floor and 80% (8-10) from the free throw line in the first quarter. Junior guard Cassandra Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) was perfect from the floor (3-3), three-point range (1-1), and the FT line (3-3) and scored 10 points in the opening 10 minutes of play.

The Monks went on to claim a game-high 26-point lead after sophomore guard Sophie Giardina (Bradenton, Fla.) netted a free throw with 1:18 left in the third quarter.

STATS OF THE GAME:

St. Joe's held the lead in rebounding (47-28), assists (17-6), second chance points (10-3), and bench points (24-9) in the victory.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Freshman guard Bri Jordan (Gray, Maine) led the way with 17 points and added four assists and three rebounds in her first collegiate start; she was 9-for-10 from the FT line in the win
  • Sophomore guard Kaleigh Walsh (Windham, N.H.) added 14 points with six rebounds
  • Stapelfeld finished the day with 13 points and five rebounds
  • Sophomore guard Alyson Fillion (Bedford, N.H.) chipped in with six points, five rebounds, and three assists
  • Senior guard Julia Quinn (Fryeburg, Maine) contributed six points, four assists, and three boards
  • Sophomore guard Grace Philippon (Glenburn, Maine) came off the bench to score nine points in 18 minutes

LEADERS – LASELL:

  • Junior guard Precious Montgomery (Bridgeport, Conn.) paced the Lasers with 23 points and seven rebounds and was 11-for-12 from the free-throw line
  • Senior guard Amanda Ortiz (Newton, Mass.) scored 21 points and added five caroms, two assists, and a pair of steals
  • Junior forward Devyn Markland (Derby, Conn.) tallied seven points and seven rebounds in 15 minutes

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the triumph, Saint Joseph's improves to 18-1 all-time versus Lasell University and has now defeated the Lasers in 17-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2005-06 campaign.

Saint Joseph's will play at Suffolk University on Tuesday in a GNAC matchup slated for a 6:00 PM tip-off.
