Monks Top Pride 4-1

Box Score

STANDISH, Maine – Senior Kuma Onyejose (East Greenwich, R.I.) netted a pair of goals to help Saint Joseph's College (5-1-2, 4-0-0 GNAC) defeat Regis College (4-3-0, 2-2-0 GNAC), 4-1, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at the SJC Athletics Complex on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Applying plenty of offensive pressure early, the Monks kicked off the scoring in the 19th minute when a Colin Grant (Harvard, Mass.) free kick clanged off the left post and landed on the foot of sophomore Aidan Hickey (Yarmouth, Maine), who kicked the ball into an empty net for his first career marker.

Onyejose doubled the SJC advantage 14 minutes later on a corner kick taken by senior Austin Ward (North Andover, Mass.). Ward sent a long volley into the box to junior Jarred Greenleaf (Scarborough, Maine), who headed a pass Onyejose for an open shot into the right side of the net.

Ward scored his first goal of the season 3:43 into the second stanza off a perfect right-to-left pass from graduate student Noah Elmore (Berlin, Vt.) and Onyejose made it a 3-0 game when he hit pay dirt off another Elmore assist in the 61st minute.

The Pride managed to get on the board just seconds later, when Alfred Bresnahan (Marblehead, Mass.) took advantage of an SJC defensive lapse to net an uncontested tally.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held leads in shots (23-3), shots on goal (12-1), and corner kicks (8-2) in the victory.

THE KEEPERS:

Graduate student David Walbridge (Hampden, Mass.) was untested in 60:29 minutes while junior Mike Sheridan (Folsom, Pa.) allowed a goal in 29:31 of mop-up duty. Regis starter Ivan Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) made seven saves in 86:33 minutes and freshman Kyle Wiedemann (Piscataway, N.J.) turned away one shot in 3:27 minutes of relief.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the win, Saint Joseph's improves to 5-0 all-time versus Regis College.
