Saint Joseph's Routs Regis, 5-2

Box Score

WESTON, Mass. – Saint Joseph's College (7-3-1, 6-1-0 GNAC) toppled Regis College (4-7, 1-6 GNAC), 5-2, in a rainy Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer contest on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks' first goal came in the 31st minute when the Pride attempted to clear the ball after a corner kick opportunity, but Alec Kosinski (East Lyme, Conn.) corralled the ball and blasted it into the net to give the visitors an early lead.

Just a minute-and-a-half into the second half, Saint Joseph's received a penalty kick attempt when Gus Ford (Falmouth, Maine) drew a foul in the box, and Austin Ward (Exeter, N.H.) converted on the opportunity. A little less than four minutes later, Ford drew another foul in the box, and this time he was successful on the penalty kick chance to extend the SJC lead to 3-0.

After an own goal in the 65th minute increased the Monks' lead to 4-0, the Pride finally broke through in the 70th minute when Zack Acciardo (Derry, N.H.) scored on a Jacob Freitas (Dracut, Mass.) feed.

The Monks reestablished their four-goal advantage in the 84th minute on a tally by Henry Wylde (Perth, Western Australia) off an assist from Gavin Lins (Manchester, N.H.).

The Pride capped the game scoring on penalty kick opportunity in the 88th minute. St. Joe's sophomore goalie Liam Foley (Middleton, Mass.) turned away both the penalty kick attempt and one follow-up shot, but Alessandro DiPaola (Newington, Conn.) cleaned up the second rebound to account for the 5-2 final.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held the advantage in shots (23-11), shots on goal (14-6), and corner kicks (10-1) in the victory.

THE KEEPERS:

SJC senior Mike Sheridan (Folsom, Pa.) started in net for the Monks and made one save in 53:26 before Foley took over for the final 36:34, collecting three saves in that span. Freddie Beckmann (Franklin, Mass.) earned eight saves in 81 minutes of action before being relieved by Kyle Weidemann (Piscataway, N.J.), who finished with one save during his time on the field.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

Saint Joseph's is now 6-0-0 all-time versus Regis College and has outscored the Pride by a 23-3 collective margin in the six meetings.
