Monks Cruise Past Cadets, 78-46

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (16-4, 10-2 GNAC) cruised past Norwich University (8-10, 6-5 GNAC), 78-46, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball contest on Mike McDevitt Court at the Harold Alfond Center on Monday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Saint Joseph's held the lead for the duration of play and turned a six-point lead (24-18) with 6:22 before the break into a 16-point cushion (38-22) by closing out the second quarter with a 14-4 run. Junior forward Jayne Howe (Pembroke, Mass.) and sophomore guard Hailey Anderson (Beverly, Mass.) netted five points apiece during the SJC scoring outbreak.

The Monks shot 64.3% (9-14) from the floor and outscored the Cadets by a 25-14 margin in the third quarter. Senior guard Cassandra Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.), who scored just two points in the first half, poured in 12 off a 3-for-4 effort from downtown in the penultimate frame.

Saint Joseph's went on to grab a game-high 35-point lead (76-41) after freshman forward Mackenzie Currie (Merrimac, Mass.) made a layup with 2:56 left in the fourth quarter.

STATS OF THE GAME:

Saint Joseph's scored 32 points off 19 turnovers while Norwich netted nine off seven SJC miscues…The Monks were credited with 23 assists on 27 made field goals.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Stapelfeld led all scorers with 17 points
  • Sophomore guard Nina Howe (York, Maine) added 13 points, four steals, and three assists
  • Jayne Howe netted 13 points with three boards and a pair of assists
  • Anderson chipped in with 12 points, two caroms, and two assists
  • Senior forward Kaleigh Walsh (Windham, N.H.) produced nine points and five rebounds
  • Sophomore guard Angelica Hurley (Groveland, Mass.) dealt seven assists and pulled down five rebounds
  • Currie contributed six points in 13 minutes off the bench

LEADERS – NORWICH:

  • Freshman forward Maren McGinn (Georgia, Vt.) came off the bench to net 10 points off a 4-for-5 shooting performance
  • Junior guard Brittany Graham (Rye, N.H.) added nine points
  • Senior guard Hannah Stitely (Westminster, Md.) netted seven points
  • Freshman guard Erika Thomas (Burlington, N.C.) tallied six points, four rebounds, and two assists

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the result, Saint Joseph's improves to 15-6 all-time versus Norwich University and has now defeated the Cadets in nine-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2015-16 campaign.
