Monks Deny Lasers on Senior Day, 3-0

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (8-2-2, 8-1-0 GNAC) defeated Lasell University (2-7-2, 2-5-2 GNAC), 3-0, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer game at the SJC Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks got on the board early when sophomore Griffin Forbes (Manchester, N.H.) scored his first NCAA goal with a header off a Rion Dos Santos (São Paulo, Brazil) corner kick at the 9:34 mark.

The 1-0 edge remained until the 54th minute when Dos Santos converted a penalty kick to the right side of the net. Junior Nate Sottak (Belmont, N.H.) completed the scoring ledger with a knock off a Divin Mpinga (Kinshasa, DRC) left-to-right cross in the box.

TEAM STATS:

The Monks held considerable advantages in shots (21-2), shots on goal (10-2), and corner kicks (7-3) in the victory.

THE KEEPERS:

SJC junior Liam Foley (Middleton, Mass.) posted a pair of stops in a shutout performance while Lasell netminder Cameron McDonough turned away seven shots in a losing effort.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the win St. Joe's improves to 9-10-0 all-time versus Lasell University and has now defeated the Lasers in seven-consecutive meetings.

SENIOR MOMENT:

Prior to the start of the game the men's soccer program held a brief ceremony to honor the team's five seniors: Kyle Girouard (Millis, Mass.), Icaro Vieira (Westborough, Mass.), Will Wood (Franklin, N.H.), Travis Matheson (Gorham, Maine), and Ryan Farr (Gorham, Maine). With these five players on the pitch, the Monks have posted an impressive 37-9-5 (.726) overall record, including a 31-2-0 (.939) mark in GNAC play, with a GNAC Championship and NCAA Tournament berth in 2021.

Saint Joseph's will play at Rivier University on Wednesday in a conference contest slated to start at 5:00 PM.
