Monks and Lyons Duel to 1-1 Stalemate

Box Score

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (0-1-1) and Wheaton College (0-0-2) dueled to a 1-1 stalemate in a hard fought non-conference men's soccer contest at the SJC Athletics Complex on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Lyons were denied by the iron on a pair of prime scoring chances in the first 21 minutes, as Joey Everett (Danbury, Conn.) hit the crossbar at the 2:43 and 20:56 marks. The Monks managed to score on their first shot of the afternoon, as sophomore Joseph Perron (South Portland, Maine) – who had just entered the game as a substitution – was sprung free with a pass down the near sideline, cleared a defender, and chipped a shot to the bottom right corner at the 33:07 mark.

St. Joe's had a couple of opportunities to add to the lead in the second half, as freshman Daniel Levesque (Lisbon, Maine) was denied by Wheaton keeper Michael O'Gara (Ardmore, Pa.) in the box off a corner kick at the 66:54 mark and freshman Haytham Ramadan (Khartoum, Sudan) missed the net on a 1v1 with the Lyons' keeper five minutes later.

Wheaton applied most of the offensive pressure in the second half and finally capitalized in the 80th minute when senior midfielder Robert Lloyd (Lexington, Mass.) hit pay dirt off an Alberto Franceschi (Caracas, Venezuela) pass.

TEAM STATS:

Wheaton held the lead in shots (16-6), shots on goal (7-4), and corner kicks (5-4) in the non-conference contest.

THE KEEPERS:

SJC junior Liam Foley (Middleton, Mass.) made six saves while O'Gara turned away three shots for the visitors.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

The Monks are now 0-4-1 all-time versus Wheaton College, a team that defeated St. Joe's by a 4-1 margin in Norton last fall.

NEXT!

Saint Joseph's will host Dean College in what will be the 2023 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opener for both teams on Tuesday at 6:00 PM.
